Laser treatments to get rid of stubborn toenail fungus

Fungal nail infections are renowned for being stubborn and persistent, and are the single most common nail disorder in adults. In medical language we refer to these infections as onychomycosis.

There are various treatment options for fungal toenails, however treatment is notoriously arduous for individuals to apply or it is toxic to their liver. Treatment options include topical treatment (such as ointments and sprays), oral medications, laser treatment  and permanent removal of the nail.

Topical treatments for toenail fungus

Topical treatment can be performed using agents such as tea tree oil or other antifungals. For treatment to be effective it can require applications from twice per day to twice per week for up to 12 months, and can therefore be difficult to adhere to. At Performance Podiatry Sydney, we find that most clients are strict with their treatments initially but can become less compliant as time goes on.

Systemic antifungal tablets (Terbinafine)

Another treatment option involves using systemic antifungal tablets, most commonly Terbinafine. These are highly effective, with reported effectiveness ranging between 70-90%. However due to the nature of the tablets being processed via the liver at high quantities, side effects are more common than with topical or fungal nail laser treatment. Side effects can include nausea and gastro-intestinal upset and are usually transient and mild-moderate in intensity. However more serious adverse effects can occur including liver disease or serious allergic reaction.

Surgery and nail fungus laser treatment

Surgical removal of the nail root can be performed, resulting in permanent removal of the fungal toenail. This is not a popular choice of treatment due to the potential for poor cosmetic appearance after the nail removal.

For these reasons, fungal nail laser has become increasingly popular as a non-invasive treatment option for fungal toenails. When paired with debridement of the toenails to de-bulk them, it can be an effective treatment. At Performance Podiatry we have been using the Fox A.R.C 1064nm Laser for over 5 years in clinic and have seen outstanding results for the treatment of this pesky nail condition. It is especially exciting to be able to provide a treatment alternative for those that have battled for years with toenail fungus.
